What Gorilla Grip is

Gorilla Grip rug pads and grippers

02What decides it

The layer nobody sees and everybody notices

Felt and rubber pads, corner grippers and full-size underlays that stop a rug skating on hardwood.

A rug pad is a strange purchase: it is the only thing here you buy hoping never to think about it again. The two-layer kind is felt for thickness and quiet, natural rubber for the grip; the thin kind is grip alone, for a rug that already has body. Both are sized to the rug rather than the room, and both want an inch of daylight at the edge so the rug lies flat over them.

Wood floors are the fussy case. A pad that traps moisture and cleaning residue between the rug and the finish is a slow way to cloud a floor, so a pad wants a house held somewhere between 30 and 50 percent humidity and a floor that was dry when the rug went down. The same rule that keeps a board from cupping keeps a pad from marking it. If a rug sits in a walking line used by somebody unsteady on their feet, the honest answer is a smaller rug or none.

Gorilla Grip rug pads and grippers: questions

The three things people ask us about rug pads and grippers before they choose a size.

Which thickness of Gorilla Grip rug pad do you want under your rug?

Thin grip pad under a rug that already has body; felt and rubber under a flatweave that feels every board through it. Height matters at doorways, so measure the gap under the door before adding felt.

Can you cut a Gorilla Grip rug pad down to your rug?

Yes. Scissors are enough for the thin pads, a sharp knife against a straight edge for the felt ones. Aim to finish an inch inside the rug on every side.

Will a Gorilla Grip pad hold your rug on tile as well as on wood?

Tile, sealed concrete and vinyl all work. What defeats a pad on any of them is a film of cleaner on the floor, so a rug that starts creeping usually needs the floor washed rather than a new pad.
