Felt and rubber pads, corner grippers and full-size underlays that stop a rug skating on hardwood.

A rug pad is a strange purchase: it is the only thing here you buy hoping never to think about it again. The two-layer kind is felt for thickness and quiet, natural rubber for the grip; the thin kind is grip alone, for a rug that already has body. Both are sized to the rug rather than the room, and both want an inch of daylight at the edge so the rug lies flat over them.

Wood floors are the fussy case. A pad that traps moisture and cleaning residue between the rug and the finish is a slow way to cloud a floor, so a pad wants a house held somewhere between 30 and 50 percent humidity and a floor that was dry when the rug went down. The same rule that keeps a board from cupping keeps a pad from marking it. If a rug sits in a walking line used by somebody unsteady on their feet, the honest answer is a smaller rug or none.
